Whoa! What’s this? It’s a 2-frame animation of a comic page. In trying to decide whether to ink my latest comic with a pen or a tablet, I did the first page both ways and animated both versions to compare them.
The pencils were drawn on 4 pages of a 3.5”x5.5” pocket sketchbook, then scanned, and inked in Photoshop (that’s the page with the bold panel borders), then I inked the pencils in the book with a 0.4 pen and scanned those (that’s the page with the wavy thin panel borders). I overlaid them in Photoshop and exported the result as a gif.
Both inking methods seem to take me about the same amount of time.
I feel more comfortable drawing with pen, but a tablet offers unlimited do-overs.
A tablet also makes it easier to draw with varied line weight, which adds visual interest.
You can tell which details were most important to me because they change the least between frames.
I can’t write as neatly with pen as I thought.
Still on the fence about how I’ll ink the comic, and would be interested in hearing your thoughts. In the meantime I’ll just be mesmerized by this for a while.
